Ladbrokes owner GVC faces probe by UK tax authority

Ladbrokes owner GVC has stated it is "shocked" the UK's tax body is widening a query into "prospective corporate angering" connected to its former Turkish online gambling unit.
It said HM Revenue & Customs had actually broadened its probe into suppliers GVC used in Turkey to include other entities within its group.
GVC offered its Turkish service in December 2017.
The company stated it was co-operating with investigation.

The UK Gambling Commission informed the BBC that it was "helping" with the investigation.
HMRC declined to comment.
In July 2019, GVC was required to reject reports that it was still taking advantage of its previous Turkish subsidiary, stressing that it no longer had ties with the organization.
"The board re-iterates the reality that subsequent to the yohaig code disposal of the group's Turkish-facing organization, GVC has no activity either directly or indirectly connected to the Turkish market," GVC said.
"Furthermore, the board likewise unconditionally refutes suggestions that the group, or senior management, continue to gain from any operations servicing the Turkish market."
Liz Coleman, former HMRC tax inspector and specialist of advisory firm Integrated Dispute Resolution, said the investigation could go on for some time.
"HMRC investigations are usually lengthy and thinking about the size of GVC it might be going on for several years, although if there's a targeted method it might be much shorter," she stated.

The HMRC's decision comes simply a week after Kenneth Alexander announced that he was stepping down as GVC's president.

GVC reported a 22% drop in overall net earnings for the yohaig code 2nd quarter this year due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
